Dump Truck & Tipper Hire in Kenya: Fleet Sizing for Earthmoving Projects

The excavator sets the pace, but the trucks decide whether it keeps it. Here is how to size a tipper fleet from haul distance, cycle time and payload — with the worked math.

    1. Why Trucks Decide the Excavation Rate

Every excavation programme hides the same truth: the digging is rarely the bottleneck — the hauling is. An excavator with its bucket in the air and no truck at the face is a machine billing you for standing still, and every waiting minute compounds across the programme. Conversely, too many trucks over-fill the queue, burn fuel in idle, and turn the loading area into a traffic jam. The discipline that separates professional earthworks from expensive improvisation is fleet matching: sizing the haulage fleet to the digging rate and the actual haul distance. Our dedicated fleet sizing guide gives the full method; this article runs it end to end.

    2. The Cycle Time Equation

Everything reduces to one number: the truck cycle time.

    ⏱️ Cycle time = queue + load + haul + tip + return

Queue: waiting at the face — falls with loading discipline.
Load: passes × bucket cycles — a 1.5 m³ bucket fills a 20 m³ truck in ~13 passes at 3–4 min total.
Haul: distance ÷ average speed — site roads at 20–25 km/h, public roads per conditions.
Tip: queuing at the dump plus body-raise time — falls with prepared, safe tipping areas.
Return: empty leg — usually 20–30% faster than the loaded haul.

Count it honestly for your site, not from a brochure: a 15 km round trip on public roads typically runs 60–90 minutes all-in; a 2 km internal site loop can run 20 minutes. Every programme number below depends on this one measurement.

    3. Payload Classes: Where Each Works

    ClassPayloadBest ForDaily Hire (KES)
Light tippers7–10 m³Estate plots, tight access, short hauls12,000–18,000
    Heavy tippers18–20 m³The urban standard; road-legal haulage18,000–28,000
    30-ton tippers22–25 m³Bulk programmes, longer hauls25,000–35,000
    Articulated dumpers20–40 t payloadSoft ground, quarry, off-road sites12,000–20,000

Rates are indicative wet-hire with drivers; the 2027 rate update carries current figures. The payload column deserves respect: overloading a 20 m³ truck to 28 m³ destroys axles, tyres and road licences, and the repair bill arrives at your door.

    4. Fleet Matching: Trucks to Excavator

The matching rule: bucket capacity should fill the chosen truck in 3–6 passes, and the truck fleet should return to the face just as the excavator finishes the previous load. Practical pairs: a 30-ton excavator with a 1.5 m³ bucket pairs naturally with 20 m³ tippers; a 50-ton machine with a 2.5–3 m³ bucket wants 30-ton trucks or doubles; compact 5-ton excavators pair with 7–10 m³ tippers on estate work. Mismatch in either direction taxes the programme: small trucks under a big bucket create queues and loading delays; big trucks under a small bucket spend their lives half-empty. Our 30-ton fleet runs standardised 20 m³ pairings for exactly this reason.

    5. Haul Roads: The Hidden Multiplier

The same trucks on the same haul produce wildly different cycle times depending on the road. A maintained site haul road — graded, drained, watered, with passing bays — runs trucks at 20–25 km/h with low tyre and suspension wear. The unmaintained version of the same route runs at 10 km/h, doubles fuel burn, and writes off tyres. The maths is decisive: halving haul speed roughly doubles haul time, which roughly doubles the trucks needed for the same production. Dozer and grader time on haul roads is not overhead — it is the cheapest production investment on the project. Fleet hirers who supply the road-building machines alongside the trucks let you protect the multiplier from day one.

    6. Sizing the Fleet: Worked Example

A site in Ruiru: 30-ton excavator (1.5 m³ bucket), 8,000 m³ of spoil to cart 12 km round trip on public roads, 10 working days.

    StepFigure
    Excavator production~120 m³/hour loading (measured)
    Truck capacity20 m³ heavy tipper
Load time per truck~8 minutes (13 passes)
Cycle time (12 km RT, road conditions)~70 minutes incl. queue & tip
    Trucks needed to keep excavator waiting-free70 ÷ 8 ≈ 9 trucks
    + 10% breakdown/attrition reserve10 trucks
    Daily output check10 trucks × 20 m³ × (600 min ÷ 70 min) ≈ 1,700 m³/day → 8,000 m³ in under 5 days at 8-hour shifts

The same job with an unsized 'four trucks should do' assumption stretches toward a month — with the excavator billing standby rates while it waits. The arithmetic is never optional.

    7. Hire vs Own: The Economics

Ownership of a 20 m³ tipper locks up KES 8–14M before fuel and drivers; a ten-truck fleet is a serious capital commitment. Hire keeps the money variable: fleets scale to each project, maintenance and breakdowns sit with the hirer, and quiet months cost nothing. The ownership crossover typically arrives when utilisation holds above ~70% on your own pipeline year-round — before that, hired fleets almost always win the total-cost comparison. For haulage-heavy contractors, the middle path — structured long-term hire or lease — captures fleet economics without the capital stack. And for one-off projects, hire is not even a contest.

    8. Frequently Asked Questions

How do I size a tipper fleet for an excavation project?

Fleet sizing starts from the excavator, not the trucks. Step one: establish the excavation production rate — a 30-ton excavator loading 1.5 m³ buckets at roughly 3–4 minutes per truck loads about 20 m³ per 10 minutes, or 120 m³ per hour in good conditions. Step two: work out the truck cycle — load time plus haul time (distance ÷ average speed), plus queue, tip and return — for your actual haul distance; a 15 km round trip on public roads typically runs 60–90 minutes. Step three: divide cycle time by load time to get trucks needed; with a 75-minute cycle and 8-minute loads, ten trucks keep one excavator waiting-free. Step four: add one spare truck per five working to absorb breakdowns and traffic. Our fleet sizing guide works the full calculation with tables.

What is the difference between a tipper and an articulated dump truck?

Conventional tippers — rigid trucks with a tipping body on a fixed chassis — are Kenya's haulage standard: simple, cheap to run, easy to load, and road-legal for public haulage. Payload classes run from 7-ton light trucks through 20–30 ton heavy tippers. Articulated dump trucks (ADTs) — tractor and trailer units pivoting between them — trade road speed for go-anywhere ability: their oscillating hitch and all-wheel drive walk through mud, sand and rough quarry ground where rigids bog down. ADTs dominate mining and large earthworks sites with poor underfoot conditions; rigids dominate everything with road access. Choosing wrong in either direction is expensive: ADTs on good roads waste their premium, rigids on soft ground spend their days being winched.

How much does dump truck hire cost in Kenya?

Tipper hire prices by class, with drivers: 7-ton light tippers at KES 12,000–18,000 per day; 20-ton heavy tippers at KES 18,000–28,000; and 30-ton units at KES 25,000–35,000. Articulated dumpers hire at KES 12,000–20,000 on poor-ground sites where they replace multiple rigids. The dominant cost is almost always fuel — a 20-ton tipper burns 3–5 km/l depending on load and terrain, so a 15 km haul can consume KES 8,000–12,000 in diesel daily. Mobilisation, road licences for public haulage, and operator welfare complete the quote. Rates update annually; see the 2027 equipment rate update for current figures.

What is cycle time in earthmoving and why does it matter?

Cycle time is the full round trip one truck takes — queue, load, haul, tip, return — and it decides how many trucks one excavator needs. Every part of it is manageable: queue time falls with loading discipline (excavator positioned for the truck's approach, not the truck hunting the pile); load time falls with bucket-truck matching (a 1.5 m³ bucket loads a 20 m³ truck in about 13 passes); haul time falls with haul road quality — a maintained site road at 25 km/h halves the time of a rutted track at 10 km/h; and tip time falls with prepared, safe tipping areas. Fleet sizing on unmanaged cycle times over-hires trucks by half; fleet sizing on engineered cycle times is how professional earthworks programmes hit their rates. Fuel discipline across the fleet — idling control, loaded-route planning — protects the budget from there.

Should I hire tippers or buy them for my construction company?

For most Kenyan contractors, hiring wins until haulage is continuous, predictable and long-term. Hire converts fixed costs into variable ones — no capital lock-up at KES 6–14M per truck, no maintenance workshop, no driver payroll in quiet months, and fleet size flexes with each project's actual demand. Ownership starts winning when trucks can be kept loaded year-round on your own works pipeline, when utilisation consistently exceeds roughly 70%, and when driver management and workshop capacity already exist in-house. Between the poles, structured long-term hire and leasing bridge the gap — many contractors run hired fleets for five years before economics justify a first purchase.
