Home / Blog / 20-Ton vs. 30-Ton vs. 50-Ton Excavator: Which Size Do You Need?

Choosing the wrong excavator size is one of the most expensive mistakes a contractor can make in Kenya. Hire a 50-ton machine for a job a 20-ton could handle, and you are burning KES 15,000โ€“25,000 per day in unnecessary hire costs. Send a 20-ton machine to break basalt rock or dig a 10-meter basement, and you will watch your schedule slip while your operator fights a machine that is out of its depth.

In Kenya's construction market, three excavator sizes dominate: the 20-ton class (compact, maneuverable, cost-effective), the 30-ton class (the versatile workhorse), and the 50-ton class (raw power for mega projects). Each occupies a distinct niche, and the gap between them is not incremental โ€” it is transformational. A 50-ton excavator does not just move 2.5 times more dirt than a 20-ton; it changes what is physically possible on your site.

This guide is written for the contractor who needs to make the right decision fast. Whether you are digging foundations in Karen, trenching for utilities in Industrial Area, breaking rock in Athi River, or stripping a 50-hectare site in Nakuru, we will show you exactly which excavator size matches your job โ€” and what you will pay for it in Kenya's 2026 equipment hire market.

At Trust Partners Geo-Group Ltd, we maintain a fleet of 20-ton, 30-ton, and 35-ton excavators (we do not operate 50-ton units, but we partner with specialized providers who do). We have deployed these machines across every major construction scenario in Kenya โ€” from tight urban basements in Lavington to bulk earthworks in the Rift Valley to rockbreaking in volcanic zones. This guide distills our field experience into a decision framework you can use immediately.

The 50-Ton Excavator: The Heavy-Hitter (Partner Service)
    50-Ton Class
    Komatsu PC 500 | Caterpillar 349F | Hitachi ZX 470 | Volvo EC 480
    Who Needs This Machine

The 50-ton excavator is a specialist machine for contractors who need maximum production in minimum time. It is not a general-purpose tool โ€” it is a production weapon. If your project involves mega basements, quarry loading, mining overburden removal, or heavy rockbreaking, the 50-ton class delivers economics that smaller machines cannot match. The bucket is massive, the breakout force is devastating, and the cycle time per cubic meter is the lowest in the industry.

Important: Trust Partners Geo-Group does not maintain 50-ton units in our direct fleet. We coordinate delivery, operator assignment, and on-site support through our specialized partner network in Nairobi and Mombasa. Contact us for availability, scheduling, and custom quotes.

    Ideal Applications
    • โ€บMega Basement Excavation: 15m โ€“ 30m+ depth for commercial towers, underground parking, and industrial foundations
    • โ€บQuarry & Mining: Loading 30-ton haul trucks, stripping overburden, and bench mining
    • โ€บHeavy Rockbreaking: Hard basalt, granite, and massive limestone with high-impact hydraulic breakers
    • โ€บMass Earthworks: Highway construction, dam construction, and large-scale land development
    • โ€บHeavy Lifting: With grapple or clamshell attachment โ€” handling precast elements, pipes, and bulk materials
    • โ€บPort & Industrial: Bulk material handling, ship loading, and heavy industrial demolition
    Key Advantages
    • โœ“Massive Production: 2.5โ€“3.5 mยณ bucket moves 400โ€“600 mยณ/hr in loose soil
    • โœ“Extreme Breakout Force: 280โ€“350 kN powers through hard rock and compacted material
    • โœ“Deep Reach: 8.5โ€“10.0m digging depth for mega excavations and deep trenches
    • โœ“Heavy Rockbreaking: Runs the largest hydraulic breakers (6,000+ Joule impact)
    • โœ“Lowest Cost Per mยณ: Despite high hire rate, production efficiency makes it cheapest for bulk work
    Limitations
    • ร—Requires 4.0m+ access width and reinforced ground โ€” cannot operate in urban plots
    • ร—Transport requires wide-load permits, escort vehicles, and specialized low-bed
    • ร—High fuel consumption (35โ€“50 L/hr) makes it uneconomical for light work
    • ร—High hire rate is unjustified for small or medium projects
    Trust Partners Geo-Group 50-Ton Partnership

We do not maintain 50-ton units in our direct fleet, but we partner with specialized providers in Nairobi and Mombasa for mega project requirements. We coordinate delivery, operator assignment, and on-site support. Contact us for custom quotes and availability. Pricing is project-specific and depends on duration, location, and attachment requirements.

How to Choose: The Decision Framework

Use this simple decision tree to match your project to the right excavator size. Answer the questions in order โ€” the first "yes" determines your machine.

    Question 1: Access Constraints

Is your site access narrower than 3.5 meters, or are there overhead power lines, trees, or buildings within 5 meters of the work area?

    YES โ†’ 20-Ton Excavator

No larger machine can physically access or operate safely. The 20-ton is your only option. Examples: basement excavation in Lavington, trenching in Kilimani, utility work in South C.

NO โ†’ Proceed to Question 2

    Question 2: Excavation Depth

Do you need to dig deeper than 7 meters, or is the excavation volume less than 5,000 mยณ?

    YES (deeper than 7m) โ†’ 30-Ton or 35-Ton

A 20-ton cannot reach effectively below 6.5m. For 7mโ€“12m, choose 30-ton. For 12mโ€“15m, choose 35-ton. For 15m+, consider 50-ton or specialized long-reach through our partners.

NO (shallow, small volume) โ†’ 20-Ton is sufficient

    Question 3: Material Hardness

Are you encountering hard rock (basalt, granite, massive limestone) that requires sustained rockbreaking?

    YES โ†’ 30-Ton, 35-Ton, or 50-Ton

For moderate rock (weathered basalt, tuff), 30-ton with breaker is sufficient. For hard, massive rock, 35-ton or 50-ton with heavy breaker is required.

NO (soil, clay, loose material) โ†’ 20-Ton or 30-Ton

    Question 4: Production Volume

Does your project require moving more than 50,000 mยณ of material, or is schedule compression critical?

YES โ†’ 50-Ton Excavator (Partner Service)

Only the 50-ton delivers the production rate to justify its hire cost on mega projects. Examples: highway earthworks, dam construction, quarry overburden removal. Contact us to coordinate through our partner network.

    NO โ†’ 30-Ton or 35-Ton is optimal

Cost Analysis: Total Cost of Ownership

Hire rate is only part of the cost equation. Fuel, operator productivity, and project duration all factor into the true cost per cubic meter. Here is a realistic comparison for a typical 10,000 mยณ bulk earthworks project in Kenya:

*Assumes 10-hour workdays, loose soil conditions, and efficient truck loading. Fuel calculated at KES 180/liter. Rockbreaking, dewatering, and transport costs excluded. The 35-ton offers the best cost per mยณ for projects within its capability range. 50-ton analysis available on request for mega projects.
Key Insight: On a 10,000 mยณ project, the 35-ton excavator saves KES 303,000โ€“400,000 compared to a 20-ton. But if your project is only 2,000 mยณ, the 35-ton's mobilization cost and minimum hire period make it more expensive than a 20-ton. Match the machine to the job size.

Frequently Asked Questions About Excavator Hire
Can I hire an excavator without an operator?
No. Trust Partners Geo-Group provides excavators only with our certified operators. This is a safety and insurance requirement. Our operators are NCA-licensed, trained on the specific machine, and carry liability coverage. If you have your own operator, we can discuss supervised operation on a case-by-case basis, but the machine remains under our operator's primary control.
How much fuel does an excavator use per day?
Fuel consumption depends on machine size and work intensity. Typical 10-hour consumption: 20-ton uses 120โ€“180 liters (KES 21,600โ€“32,400), 30-ton uses 200โ€“280 liters (KES 36,000โ€“50,400), 35-ton uses 250โ€“350 liters (KES 45,000โ€“63,000). Light grading work uses less fuel than heavy rockbreaking. We provide daily fuel logs and can set up bulk fuel supply contracts for long-term projects.
What is the minimum hire period?
Minimum hire is one day (8 hours) for 20-ton, 30-ton, and 35-ton machines within Nairobi. For all sizes outside Nairobi, minimum is 3 days. Weekly and monthly rates offer significant discounts: a 30-ton machine costs KES 60,000/day for daily hire, but rates drop for longer commitments. Contact us for custom long-term pricing.
Can I switch machine sizes mid-project?
Yes. We understand that project requirements change. If you start with a 20-ton for utility trenching and later need a 30-ton or 35-ton for bulk excavation, we will swap machines with 24-hour notice. No penalty for machine changes โ€” you only pay for the days each machine is on site. This flexibility is one reason contractors prefer long-term partnerships with Trust Partners Geo-Group.
    Do you provide rockbreaker attachments?
Yes. We provide hydraulic rockbreakers for all machine sizes: 20-ton (2,000 Joule), 30-ton (4,000 Joule), and 35-ton (4,000+ Joule). Rockbreaker hire is charged at KES 6,500โ€“8,000/hr additional, depending on machine size and breaker capacity. We also provide grapples, clamshells, and augers for specialized work.
How do I know if my site can handle a 30-ton or 35-ton excavator?
We conduct a free site assessment before delivery. Our engineer checks: access width and height, ground bearing capacity (to prevent sinking), overhead obstacles, proximity to structures, and soil conditions. If your site cannot safely support a 30-ton or 35-ton machine, we will tell you honestly and recommend the appropriate smaller machine or ground reinforcement options.
