Equipment Transport Costs per Km in Kenya
Per-Kilometer Rates, Exclusions & Backloads — 2027 Guide
NCA licensed equipment hire specialists with 15+ years experience. We haul what we hire — here is what a kilometer really costs, what quotes hide, and how backloads cut your bill.
How Transport Gets Priced
Equipment transport in Kenya prices three ways: per day for regional utilization, per trip for inter-town moves, and — the format this guide prices — per kilometer for planning and benchmarking. The three reconcile: our low-bed axle guide publishes day rates and example trips, and the per-km bands below are derived from those same trips so you can check any quote you receive against all three formats.
Per-Km Rates by Road Class (2027)
| Road class | 3-axle per km | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Highway corridor | KES 250-400 | Nairobi-Mombasa, Nairobi-Nakuru-Eldoret |
| Secondary road | KES 400-600 | County tarmac, moderate traffic |
| Rough / mountain | KES 600-900 | Corrugated, steep passes, spotters |
Where the Per-Km Money Goes
| Cost element | Share of rate |
|---|---|
| Fuel (at pump prices) | 35-45% |
| Tractor + driver standing costs | 25-30% |
| Trailer wear, tires, maintenance | 15-20% |
| Margin, insurance, compliance | 10-15% |
What's In, What's Out
A per-km rate includes tractor, trailer, driver and fuel. It typically excludes loading/offloading assistance, permits and police escorts on regulated moves, toll and weighbridge fees (KES 3,000-8,000 per long trip on tolled corridors), waiting time beyond an agreed allowance, and the empty return leg unless a backload is arranged. Get exclusions line-by-line — vague all-in quotes surface exclusions at roadside prices.
The Backload Lever
A tractor must return anyway. When the transporter finds paying cargo near your delivery point — another contractor's machine, produce, steel, containers — the return leg costs little extra to run, and professional hauliers pass 20-40% of that back as a discount on your one-way rate. Always ask whether your quote assumes a backload; an assumed-but-unfound backload gets re-invoiced as an empty return. Consolidating your own moves — one trailer, two machines, sequential drops — achieves the same effect without depending on anyone else's cargo.
Rough-Route Premium
Rough routes price 50-100% above highway bands: speeds drop from 70-80 km/h to 25-40 km/h, tire and suspension wear multiplies, fuel burn rises at low speed and in low gears, and route risk demands spotters and sometimes convoy configuration. A 100 km rough leg can cost what 200 highway km cost. Describe track condition honestly when quoting — surprises reprice at the roadside.
Self-Drive vs Load It
For moves under roughly 15-20 km between adjacent sites, roading a tracked machine can avoid mobilization — but count track wear (KES 1,500-3,000 per roading km), transit time at 3-5 km/h, and liability on public roads. Beyond that, the low-bed wins on both cost and safety.
Getting an Honest Quote
- Quote per km AND per trip — the cross-check exposes padding; benchmark day rates against the 2027 fleet rates update
- List exclusions explicitly — waiting time, empty return, tolls; the traps are in our hidden charges guide
- Agree waiting allowances in writing per minimum-hire pricing and agreement clauses
- Ask about backloads — 20-40% off is standard where return cargo exists
