    INTRODUCTION

Basement excavation is a specialized phase of construction that unlocks valuable underground space for parking, storage, or additional program areas while maximizing the footprint of a site. At Trust Partners Geo-Group, we’re at the forefront of delivering safe, efficient, and cost-effective basement excavation solutions across Kenya. Here’s what you need to know about basement excavation, why it matters, and how we can help your project succeed.

    WHAT IS BULK BASEMENT EXCAVATION?

Basement excavation is the process of removing soil to create a below-ground level or levels within a building footprint. This typically involves:

    ASSESSING SITE CONDITIONS

Detailed site assessment and feasibility studies.

    DESIGNING SUPPORT & DRAINAGE

Temporary shoring, dewatering plans, waterproofing strategy, and drainage layout.

    EXECUTING EXCAVATION

Controlled soil removal, slope stabilization, and careful coordination with utilities.

TYPES OF BULK BASEMENT EXCAVATION METHODS, GROUND STABILIZATION OPTIONS, PROS, CONS, AND KENYA CONTEXT

It is Bulk excavation using excavators and trucks, with temporary shoring to support the trench or basement walls during excavation.

    SHORING OPTIONS (WHERE APPLICABLE)

    • Timber bin shoring for shallow or small-scale works (temporary).
    • Steel sheet piles driven to form an open cut with retained walls.
    • Soldier piles with covered lagging (wood or steel) for deeper excavations.

    PROS

    • Straightforward method; familiar to most contractors.
    • Quick setup for shallow works; scalable with depth.

    CONS

    - Shoring adds cost and time; careful sequencing needed to avoid over-excavation.

    - Requires space for temporary works and spoil removal.

    BEST FOR

Shallows to mid-depth basements with good access.

    KENYA CONSIDERATIONS

    • Availability of steel sheet piles and timber; lead times for materials.
    • Urban edge conditions: minimize disturbance to roads and utilities; coordinate with authorities.

It is Excavation with benched steps; shoring used selectively where faces are unstable or cutting series are deep.

    SHORING OPTIONS (WHERE APPLICABLE)

    • Lightweight struts and walers for bench faces.
    • Temporary sheet piles in soft pockets to prevent collapse.
    • Ground anchors or tiebacks for higher stability in longer faces.

    PROS

    - Safer slope stability; reduces risk of wall collapse.

    - Shoring can be minimized to critical zones, reducing overall cost.

    CONS

    • More complex sequencing; monitoring required.
    • Potential for longer cycle times due to temporary works.

    BEST FOR

Sites with varied soil strength or where deep cuts require added support.

    KENYA CONSIDERATIONS

Mixed Kenyan soils (volcanic tuffs, clays) respond differently; use benched shoring where necessary.

Weather and erosion control on exposed slopes during rains.

It is Excavation where groundwater is actively controlled, with shoring to hold faces while dewatering system operates.

      SHORING OPTIONS (WHERE APPLICABLE)

    • Permanent or temporary sheet piles or soldier piles to resist earth pressures while pumping.
    • Struts and walers to brace exposed faces.

     PROS

    - Dry working space facilitates deeper excavations and better-standing walls.

    - Improves safety by reducing wall movement during dewatering cycles.

     CONS

    • Shoring adds complexity and cost; requires maintenance with pumping ops.

     BEST FOR

High groundwater sites, urban settings, or deeper basements.

      KENYA CONSIDERATIONS

Ensure coordination with dewatering discharge and electrical supply for pumps.

Plan for backup power to keep dewatering active during power outages.

It is a stabilization techniques used to augment shoring performance, enabling deeper or safer excavations when soil conditions are poor.

     SHORING-RELATED OPTIONS (WHERE APPLICABLE)

    • Jet grouting or slurry grouting to create stiffened zones that reduce wall movement and allow lighter shoring.
    • Micro-piles or braces installed ahead of the shoring to transfer loads to stable strata.
    • Geo synthetic reinforcement to support bench faces or shallow wall sections.

     PROS

    - Improves stability and reduces movement of shoring systems.

    - Can reduce required shoring depth or number of struts.

     CONS

    • Adds cost and design complexity; requires geotechnical input.
    • Best for: Soft or permeable layers near shoring, urban sites with vibration limits.

     KENYA CONSIDERATIONS

Availability of expertise and equipment; coordinate with geotechnical engineers for design.

This method of basement excavation involves permanent or temporary walls used to retain earth during excavation; shoring is essentially the same system, installed to support the cut.

     SHORING OPTIONS (WHERE APPLICABLE)

    • Anchors or tiebacks to increase resistance and reduce wall movement.
    • Grouted connections to improve impermeability and stiffness.

      PROS

    - Strong earth retention; enables deeper excavations near structures.

    - Reduces movement and protects adjacent properties.

    CONS

High initial cost and logistics; space for piling equipment.

     BEST FOR

Deep basements adjacent to utilities, roads, or existing buildings.

    KENYA CONSIDERATIONS

Availability of sheet piles, secant piles, and tiebacks.

Utility coordination and neighbor impact management.
